So here is some history as to how this fabulous event came about. Out in the Square has been running for about 25 years. This Gay and Lesbian fair was set up those many years ago to raise
awareness around homo/queer-sexuality here in New Zealand. To give a chance for those queer to be able to celebrate who they are in such a open minded space.
On the 21st of January 2012 Out in the Square was held in Civic Square in Wellington kicking off at 11.00am with announcements of the days plans to come. There were fantastic performances by Lady S, Ellie Kat, Mama DeZiyah, Felicity Frockaccino, Poppy Dust, Rooster and Dutch girl, Burlesque Performers, Patty Boy and Zakk d'Larte and various other magnificent performances.
There were stalls held by various groups and organisations such as Schools Out (a Queer Support Group in the Wellington Region), the NZ police, and Green Peace. Plus there were many other stalls selling goods such as Out in the Square bracelets, books, badges, clothing, candy, raffle tickets for exciting prizes, food, a coffee cart for those coffee fans!
And many more awesome stalls!
There was also a fun photo booth! Where you got a rub on tattoo and then you and some friends (or just by yourself) could get photo taken with your funky tats and then get a free print out so you could remember how much of a fun day you really had! My friend Harlyn and I had at go with it :3
This was my first Out in the Square experience and what a totally fun and amazing experience it was! Watching the beautiful drag queen's doing their thang, meeting some new people, getting exciting badges and getting down with my amazing dance moves on the floor to mainly Poppy Dust, the beautiful Patty Boy and Zakk and random mainstream beats like Britney Spears at the end of the event.
One of my main highlights was when I first laid eyes on Patty Boy and Zakk, I was like WOAH! (I adddddddoreeeee queer men LIKE CRAZY, they make me insanely happy :3) and my heart was just thumping with joy! Patty had adooorable unicorn boots on! And I'd like to think that Chase and I are some of their biggest fans. We got their autographs, photos and they hugged us!! We were going crazy for them! Especially at their 4.00pm performance, we were screaming “Wear your colours!”
Such a great event to attend! And I suggest that everyone should go next year! It is worth it, it is fun, lots of great things to buy, fantastic entertainment and lots of beautiful people!
Treat yourself to Out in the Square next year!
