Love Songs

It’s almost become a natural instinct now that whenever I’m upset I listen to as many songs with varying levels of depressing lyrics as I can. The unfortunate thing is that I have so many of these songs on my iPod, not to mention on CDs, iTunes and they seem to be played constantly on the radio. Perhaps I just need to get some happier music, or break this continuous habit, but recently I’ve been in the mood where the sappy lovesick songs are the ones I really want to listen to.

I have whole playlists made up entirely of these songs, and I’ll find myself skipping songs that tend to more cheerful and uplifting. There’s one thing that I’ve noticed though: with all the love, heartbreak, flirtatious and sexual songs I’ve heard only the smallest handful are about queer relationships.

Maybe that’s because there aren’t many queer artists or maybe it’s because they write songs without gender defining pronouns, but for those of us who want a man singing about a man, or a lesbian lovesong, it seems like those out-and-proud artists aren’t being as open as they could be.

I’m not saying that right away they have to go off and release an album full of love songs about the same sex, but I’d like to hear some more queer love songs in the close future. Then again, there’s always the chance that my music taste is largely dominated by artists who love the opposite sex and that there are actually hundreds of queer artists singing their love to the masses.

Despite my seemingly never ending supply of straight love/heartbreak songs, I do have a few on the more ‘flamboyant side’. For instance, Lady Gaga has a few songs that help to prove her bisexuality. The song “So Happy I Could Die” has lyrics that imply a lesbian crush, or love, although the song is about her fear of addiction or, her “Fear of Addiction Monster.” The addiction is most likely about alcohol, but could also be about a woman. Another of Gaga’s songs, “Pokerface”, is said to be about having sex with a man, while thinking about a woman.

And then, Adam Lambert’s “Fever” (Originally written by Lady Gaga) is quiet obviously about having sex with a man. Although I haven’t actually listened to the song in a long time as it was somehow deleted off my iTunes, I remember it’s almost as flamboyant as Lambert himself.

Although straight, in the song “Not Myself Tonight” off the much hated album “Bionic”, that I have listened to countless times and absolutely adore, Christina Aguilera mentions kissing both sexes. The song also mentions barely being able to stand and being very drunk, so it’s not exactly a love or heartbreak song.

In the song “My Boots” by Lights the lyrics imply a few times a wee crush on a girl, although I’m probably reading too far into the lyrics now. The meaning of the song is very deep and abstract so it’s hard to tell, but the song is very seasonal, mentioning winter quiet often.

There’s probably more songs hidden in the depths of my computer, but it would take hours, possibly days to find them all, and even with the few I’ve found I’ll still have to stick with songs sung by girls, or without gender defining pronouns.

Haha I love your interpretation of ‘My Boots’. I want to listen to Lights now…grr silly no sound work computer!

Well written and completely relate to this feeling, I wanted to start up a NAGS band to fix this problem at one point! But since then I have managed to find quite a few queer artists/songs…. you just have to use google to it’s potential! xD
