New Support for Families of Queer Youth Starts Up

New Support for Families of Queer Youth Starts Up

A new group has just emerged in Palmerston North, to support families and friends of queer people. The new group PFLAG Central, is part of the worldwide network called PFLAG (Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays), and is one of only two in New Zealand.

They are extending a welcome to parents, families and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons.  They write: "we provide a caring, safe and confidential place where people can share their difficulties, and support each other as they begin to understand and accept the family member they love.  We also welcome parents who may not need support but may be able to offer wisdom and friendship.  The love and support of their families is vital for young (and older), gay people to develop a sense of their own worth.  All discussions are confidential and many people come to listen, not to talk."

PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, their families and friends through: support, education and advocacy.  They provide and opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and act to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.

PFLAG Central's next meeting is in early June 2011 please email pflag (at) inspire (dot) net (dot) nz for details.
