How to help others
Have you been a witness to homophobic bullying?
Do
- talk about sexuality and gender identity and diversity as being positive and normal
- decide not to use homophobic language, ever
- be seen to be diversity friendly
- talk positively about the value of everyone getting on regardless of our differences
- keep your eye on people who you think are being targeted
- work out ways to keep us safe after we tell about being bullied.
Don’t
- tell everyone when someone tells you they are being bullied or that they have or think they have a different sexuality or gender identity (keep it confidential)
- say ‘tone it down’ or ‘don’t be so out there’ – the person has a right to be themselves, just like you
- say ‘just ignore it’, and don’t ignore it yourself
- (Adults) don’t say (or think) ‘back in my day’ or ‘when I was at school’. Keep in the moment.
