Organisational homophobia, also called institutional homophobia, is when big organisations perpetuate or reinforce homophobia through their policies, actions, or processes.
Schools are common places where organisational homophobia is often found. It occurs when the adults who run the school ignore the needs of same sex-attracted and trans students and even staff.
Specific examples include omitting mention of homophobia in school policy documents about bullying and equal opportunities for staff, tolerating the use of homophobic language while not allowing racist language, not countering homophobic incidents, not promoting sexuality and gender diversity alongside other diversities, and the exclusion of same-sex couples from the school ball.
