How to be an ally

To confront cultural and school homophobia

  1. Report it: Talk to the Principal or school management about the problem
  2. Write a letter to the Boards of Trustees about how bad the problem is. Tell them that something needs to be done
  3. Speak out against homophobia
  4. Promote diversity
  5. Talk to a supportive teacher or the school counsellor about setting up a diversity group
  6. the chances are there are lots of people who share your belief that something needs to be done in your school about homophobia
  7. You do not need to be queer to care!

  1. Do you use words like ‘homo’ ‘faggot’ ‘poofter’ ‘lezzie’ or ‘gay’ (in a negative way)?
  2. Have you ever shared one of your friend’s secrets with someone else?
  3. Do you and your friends judge others for acting in a certain way or wearing certain clothes that are not the norm? 
  4. Do you ever say homophobic stuff just to impress other people, or because everyone else is?

Three or Four:

An inclusive, trustworthy and friendly attitude to all people is an important skill. A little work could help you to develop supportive networks, good friends, and help you to become a respected leader.

One or Two:

Being a leader around diversity and acceptance can be challenging. But it looks like you do have what it takes to make a difference for the people around you.

None:

You are a true visionary. You are there for all the people around you no matter who they are.
