Intersex

What does it mean to be Intersex?

Intersex is general term that some of us use when our reproductive or sexual anatomy doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions of male or female.

For example, we might be born appearing to be female on the outside, but having mostly male-typical anatomy on the inside. Or we may be born with genitals that seem to be in-between the usual male and female types. Or, we may be born with a mix of genetics, so that some cells have XX chromosomes and some of them have XY.

Intersex is a socially constructed term used by medical systems when they can’t neatly categorise people. In every day life, all of our bodies are different and unique.
